WiFi QR code

Type the network name and the password, and the code builds on screen. Whoever scans it connects in one tap, with no dictation over the counter and no passwords written on napkins. For cafes, clinics, holiday rentals and the waiting room wall.

How it works

Three steps, nothing to install.

Everything runs on your own computer, start to finish.

1

Copy the network name exactly

The SSID is case and space sensitive: Cafe_Central and cafe_central are different networks. Copy it from the router or the phone's settings, not from memory.

2

Pick the security and add the password

WPA is the norm on any home network of the last fifteen years; WEP only on very old gear; no password for open networks. If the network is hidden, tick the option, or some phones will not find it.

3

Download and test

Scan with a phone that has never been on that network: that is the test that counts. Only then print and put it up.

It ends password dictation

A strong password has twenty characters with symbols, which is exactly why nobody wants to dictate or type it. The code reads it in one go, without errors, and the password can finally be strong at no cost to anyone.

Special characters travel protected

Semicolons, quotes and backslashes inside the network name or the password break a badly built code. This generator escapes them per the specification, and the network connects even when the password looks like an explosion of symbols.

iPhone and Android, native camera

The WIFI: format has been read by both systems' cameras for years, no app needed. The join-network prompt appears, and one tap does it.

Nothing you type leaves your browser. The code is drawn on your computer, is not sent to any server, and is not stored anywhere after you close the page.
Limits, stated upfront

The password is readable inside the code

That is how the format works: any QR reader extracts the text, password included. Posting the code hands the network to whoever walks by. For a cafe that is exactly the point; for the accounting network, it is not. Use it on guest networks.

Enterprise networks are out

Networks with a username and password per person (WPA2-Enterprise, the eduroams of this world) do not fit the format. The code serves home and guest networks with one shared password.

Change the password, kill the code

Paper does not update. When you rotate the network password, the posted codes silently stop connecting. Print anew the moment you change the network.

Questions

Questions about the WiFi QR.

Does it work with WPA2 and WPA3?

Yes. The generator's WPA option covers WPA, WPA2 and WPA3 personal: the phone negotiates on its own whichever version the router speaks.

What if my network is hidden?

Tick the hidden network option. Without it, some phones will not look for networks that do not announce themselves, and the code seems broken when it is not.

Can I put the code on the cafe menu?

You can and should: it is one of the places it gets used most. Just remember any customer can share a photo of the menu, and the network goes with it. Guest password, always.

How much does it cost?

The first download each day is free in every tool, no account needed. After that, each code costs 1 EUR as a one-off purchase: you pay for that code and there is no monthly fee.

Tired of dictating
the password?

Open the generator and type the network. Nothing to install, nothing sent anywhere.
